Lucky Strike

Lucky strike cigarettes, manufacture red by the American Tobacco Company are made of the best Turkish blends of tobacco leaves. Before 1916, the brand carried a message that smokers of the brand came to be familiar with: L.S./M. F.T. The dark green colored packages bearing this “message”, meaning Lucky Strike Means Fine Tobacco, became popular among soldiers during times of war. Television commercials during this time were effective ways of advertising all sorts of products, and Lucky Strike cigarettes were no exception. In the sixties, the television commercials run by Lucky Strike cigarette brands, including Lucky Strike Lights, began boasting the slogan “Lucky Strike separates the men from the boys…but not from the girls.” This was one of the first times that this type of advertising had been used in television. Raymond Loewy, a leading designer who developed Lucky Strike’s logo, agrees that this kind of advertising leads one to think that the Lucky Strike cigarette brand can positively influence someone’s psychological image in public. Recognizing this subconscious message, the American government banned this type of advertising for cigarette products leaving the American Tobacco Company’s marketers scrambling to invent new strategies to promote the brand. Switching their focus to filtered cigarettes helped them continue to maintain a considerable share of the advertising market.
