Created by Phillip Morris International and made by the Altria Group, the Next brand of cigarettes was born due to an increase in cigarette taxes in Malaysia, pushing their top selling brand, Marlboro out of the market. Thought by many to be a “cheap” version of the original Marlboro cigarette, the Next cigarette brand often has been known to have defects in its wrapping papers but smokes well. The cost per pack was less, and this attracted more of the casual smoker, however, the stronger taste of the Next brand cigarette attracted an even bigger audience. Because of their strong taste, smoking the Next brand cigarettes caused one to smoke fewer and smoke them further between. The stronger taste “held” some smokers over longer. Facing several marketing challenges during the time the tax increases went into affect, the focuses were divided between making cigarettes safer and selling the most possible. During the Next brand of cigarettes’ launch, lawsuits had begun and offered new challenges to the Phillip Morris International Company. Being careful about the additives and chemicals included in the Next brand cigarette production eventually lead to its decrease in sales, which lead to an almost extinct brand of cigarettes.
