Pall Mall

Pall Mall’s product line of cigarettes makes the famous cigarette brand marketable to almost any targeted segment group. With charcoal filters, the full line of Pall Mall cigarettes is sold all over the world. Produced today by R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, and originally launch by the Butler & Butler Company in 1899, Pall Mall cigarettes were positioned as a premium brand for the upper class. This attempt however was a failed one as American Tobacco purchased Butler & Butler in 1907 and saw different directions to take the brand. Size became an issue around this time and the American Tobacco Company used Pall Mall as their “experiment”. The lengths of the cigarettes as well as the designs on the cigarettes themselves were changed and adapted until the Pall Mall known today was developed. Testing new “stuffing” technology, the American Tobacco Company tried to reduce the amount of irritation caused to a smoker’s throat. Success in this area thrust the Pall Mall cigarette brand to the top of the popularity charts in 1960 and was the best selling brand in America. Being the first to introduce the “longs” or the longer cigarettes, the American Tobacco Company set the standard size of the cigarettes we see today. Changing owners again replaced the focus of design and length back to money. It was then that the Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corporation saw a sharp decline in sales, almost destroying the investment they had just made.
